Yin Yoga and Chakra/Meridian Meditation

The mysteries of the energetic body go as deep as the Spirit, as deep as the mysteries of life and death.

The study of the Chakras and Meridians is the study of the wheels and rivers of subtle energy that unite our physical, emotional and thinking bodies.

Yin Yoga directly affects the Meridian system. And the techniques of surrender can lead the practitioner into her spine where the Chakra wheels spin and deep truths reside.

Joe will present an outline of the Ancient Theory of the Three Bodies (Chakra layers) and how it blends with the Modern Meridian Theory through a brief lecture.

However, the real education is in the practice: A Yin Yoga sequence to release thick fibrous channels of Fascia where the Meridian lines commonly stagnate; And brief but potent seated Chakra Meditations to pull the freed energy deep into the spine in order to facilitate a healthy progression of Heart, Mind and Spirit.

Yin Yoga Basics: Target Area and Prop Exploration

Yin Yoga is a very simple practice. We settle into a posture for 3-7 minutes and slowly relax our muscles to allow the deeper drier tissues–-the connective tissues that wrap our muscles and make up our joint capsules-–to be safely and therapeutically stretched, stimulated and strengthened.

The alignment rules of the postures are also simple, but more importantly they are functional and organic: Listen to the body and find the posture in the natural contours of spine, pelvis and hips. However, simplicity can be challenging.
Listening to our bodies to find the natural alignment of the pose requires a power of discrimination, and an understanding and familiarity with the ever-changing sensations in the body.


In this practice, Joe will patiently lead you into an exploration of the many possible shapes in Yin with and without props, and cue the functional sensations and warn of possible contraindications.

Assisted Yin: Art of Holding Your Student's Pose

Come experience giving and receiving more directly in Yin Yoga.

In this practice designed for teachers, we will partner with another teacher/student to learn how to safely and effectively move each other through your unique ranges of motion.
Next, we will find the therapeutic stretches (the "target areas") of the Yin Yoga poses.
Finally, we will sit with the receiver's body secured and the giver's body quiet, calm and comfortable enough to ensure a gentle effort of surrender and an open and therapeutic transmission of prana.

Joe Barnett will guide you through this little known practice of Assisted Yin Yoga, a one-on-one experience as taught to him by his long time mentor and creator of Yin Yoga Paul Grilley. Come with a partner or meet one in the class. Every one will be paired with someone.

A Yin Yoga practice designed specifically to dive into the Ligaments of the Spine.

Bending and twisting the spine for 3-5 minutes of surrender in every direction, the postures of this sequence are designed to release fixation and draw fluids into the discs.

The goal is lightness and freedom of movement, as well as the release of emotional blockages which regularly get trapped deep into the body's axis.

A gentle breath work and visualization practice will accompany these techniques to assist in soothing the Spirit of the practitioner as she moves through these challenges and finds quiet, rest and spinal freedom.

A Yin Yoga practice designed specifically to stretch, stimulate, and strengthen the Joint Capsules of the Hips.

Surrendering for 3-5 minute of traction in all four quadrants of the thigh, the postures of this sequence are designed to release fixation and increase the production of synovial fluid with the hips.

The goal is lightness and freedom of movement, as well as release of the unique emotional blockages often trapped in and around the pelvis and hip sockets.

A gentle breath work and visualization practice will accompany these techniques to assist in soothing the Spirit of the practitioner as she moves through these challenges and finds quiet, rest and open hips.

3rd Eye: Yin Yoga, Visualization and Dreamwork

Yin Yoga's techniques of surrender and observation naturally opens what yogis called the Third Eye: the space where visions and dreams are projected...though not necessarily where they originate.

As the deep tissue is released in Yin Yoga, water channels open up in the physical body, the energy flows more freely and an equally fluid course of visions often follow. Working a variety of these Meridian lines with a complete sequence can induce an equally wide spectrum of imagery which begin to interweave and create a landscape of stories.

At this point the Yogi has a golden opportunity: An opportunity to achieve lucidity in the terms of Western Dream Science, or Samadhi in the terms of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras; An opportunity to see and interact clearly and calmly with our Shadows as well as our Higher Selves.

The intention of this practice will be to develop Third Eye receptivity while freeing the joints of stagnation and fixation.
